Beautiful Song
(©1991 Andy Hill)
I heard a band playing a hypnotic, soothing reggae song in a bar one night, and misheard the singer. I learned later that he was singing the words “beautiful soul, beautiful soul…” But my mind had already wandered off in the direction of what a beautiful song meant to me - that mysterious combination of certain words, the right music, the singer, and the uniqueness of the inner and outer landscape within which it all happens.

It was a beautiful song
It was a beautiful melody
It went on and on
Like a beautiful memory
And I saw you and I saw me
And I saw slaves for the first time free
It went on and on
It was a beautiful song

It was a beautiful poem
It was a beautiful eulogy
It made me want to know him
It rang so true to me
Something in the voice
Something in the rhyme
Maybe something in my life at the time
He knew it all along
He sang a beautiful song

It was a beautiful dream
It was a beautiful fantasy
That after all you’d seen
You’d return at last to me
Three roads converged
Where I did stand
The one that brought me
And the two at hand
I stood at the scene of a beautiful dream
I stood at the scene of a beautiful dream
